(Formerly Louisiana Used Motor
Vehicle & Parts Commission AND Louisiana Recreational and
Used Motor Vehicle Commission)
The Louisiana Used Motor
Vehicle Commission was created by Act 773 of the 1984
Louisiana Legislature on September 4, 1984 and is a state
governmental entity funded by licensing fees generated by
individuals and companies who are licensed by this Commission
to sell used passenger cars, used passenger trucks, new and
used motorcycles, new and used trailers and new and used motorhomes. This agency is responsible for the licensing and
regulation of used motor vehicle dealers and automotive
dismantlers and parts recyclers. Since inception, this agency
was mandated to assume regulatory authority over marine
dealers, dealers of marine products, all terrain vehicles,
buses, manufacturer/distributor sales representatives, and
motor vehicle crushers. This agency polices all licensed
dealers to insure that all laws are followed and assists
consumers who purchase used vehicles and encounter problems.
Whenever a complaint is filed with this office, it is logged
in and assigned to a field investigator. The field
investigator will contact both parties and mediate to resolve
the problem/complaint. Administrative hearings are held on
those dealers who are found to be in violation of this
agency's laws. If found guilty, the dealer may be assessed a
fine and his licenses may be suspended or revoked.
The field
investigators of the Louisiana Used Motor
Vehicle Commission conduct routine lot inspections on all
licensees and inspect paperwork to insure compliance with
laws, rules and regulations of the Commission, as well as
those laws, rules and regulations of the Office of Motor
Vehicles. The LRUMVC has established a close working
relationship with Federal Agents in investigating cases of
odometer tampering. Field investigators have attended training
seminars on methods of detecting odometer tampering and
exactly how to prepare and conduct these investigations in
order to obtain a conviction.
The Louisiana
Used Motor Vehicle Commission licenses and
regulates approximately 14,000 licensees. Fees generated from
these licenses issued are used to operate this agency. This
agency operates solely on self-generated funds. |
