A
Message From the Director:
Since the invasion of the small gas and electric
powered toy scooters and/or mini bikes, this
Commission has been inundated with phone calls and
complaints. As the public is well aware, these
small scooters or mini bikes cannot be operated on
the roads, streets or highways of this state.
They can create a real hazard to our young people,
as they are fast, low to the ground and the majority
of our children are given no professional training
on how to operate or use these devices.
Recently the life of two young individuals nearly
came to a devastating end as they rode their gas
powered mini bike onto the street and into the path
of a vehicle. Luckily no one was seriously
injured.
This Commission licenses and regulates the sale of
all gas powered scooters and/or mini bikes as well
as full sized motorcycles, ATV's and dirt bikes.
We license the manufacturer, distributor as well as
the dealers who sell these products in this state.
Numerous attempts have been made to determine what
can be done to curtail the importation and selling
of these toy scooters and/or mini bikes. This
Commission has contacted the Port Authorities,
letting them know of the requirements to obtain a
license from this Commission. We have also
contacted parish and local authorities who grant
vendors and/or occupational licenses so they can
advise their licensees of the requirement to obtain
a license from this Commission in order for them to
sell these items in this state. Our
investigators have issued Cease and Desist Orders to
persons selling these items without obtaining the
correct license.
This Commission's objective is to protect our most
precious resources (an individual's life, namely our
children) and our licensed legitimate dealers who
must meet several requirements which includes an
established place of business, a permanently affixed
business sign, a working and usable telephone,
listed in the business name, a surety bond,
liability insurance, as well as the proper fees.
If a consumer purchases one of the items from a
legitimate dealer, there are recourses. But
who do you see when this item needs a part or
repairs and the person who sold you the item on the
side of the street is no where to be found.
Any concerned citizens who know of someone setting
up shop on the side of the road with just a truck
and a trailer with several of these toy scooters
and/or mini bikes for sale, can contact this
Commission at
